Alexander T. Whalley

Bio

Alexander Whalley is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Calgary and the Haskayne School of Business. He also serves as a Lab Economist at the Creative Destruction Lab - Rockies and a research fellow with the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies.  He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland – College Park and has been a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics, Stanford University, the University of California - Berkeley, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.  

Research Interests

Professor Whalley's research interests are in urban economics, economics of innovation, labor economics, and economic history.  His work has been published in the Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economics and Statistics, American Economic Journal - Economic Policy, and the Journal of Public Economics, among other outlets.  He has been involved in over $ 5 million of research grants  from the National Science Foundation (USA), National Bureau of Economic Research (USA) , Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada), National Sciences and Engineering Research Council  (Canada) and the Alberta Major Innovation Fund (Canada) to support his research. 

Teaching Interests

Professor Whalley has taught Ph.D., MBA and Undergraduate courses in Econometrics, Labor Economics, Urban Economics, and Real Estate.   He received a campus-wide teaching award at the University of Calgary in 2020.
